Description

Summary:

Yunnan Yingjiang Wakuhe Hydropower Station (hereafter referred as to “the proposed project” or “the project”) is located in the Wakuhe drainage area in Yingjiang County, Dehong Dai-Jingpo Autonomous Prefecture, Yunnan Province, China. The project involves four hydropower stations which are developed and operated by Yingjiang Hongfu Investment Co., Ltd.

The total installed capacity is 51MW with annual electricity supplied to the grid of 229,140MWh. The project consists of four hydropower stations, of which,

Wakuhe 1st level station has a total installed capacity of 4MW with an annual utilization of 4,688hours and annual net electricity supplied to the grid of 16,840MWh, Wakuhe 2nd level station has a total installed capacity of 15MW with an annual utilization of 5,003hours and annual net electricity supplied to the grid of 67,410MWh, Wakuhe 3rd level station has a total installed capacity of 17MW with an annual utilization of 5,025hours and annual net electricity supplied to the grid of 76,730MWh, Gaohe 1st level station has a total installed capacity of 15MW with an annual utilization hours of 5,059hours and annual net electricity supplied to the grid of 68,160MWh.

The power generated by the project will be connected to the Kachang transformer substation, then to the Southern Grid.

The proposed project activity will transmit renewable hydropower to the Southern Grid, and substitute relevant generation from fired power plant of the Southern Grid, and reduce Greenhouse Gas emissions amount to 167,194tCO2e annually in the first crediting period. Contribution to sustainable development:

The hydropower project is a means to generate renewable energy with no fossil fuels emissions, and improve the generation capability in the Southern Grid. The development of the project is in compliance with the developing objective of the Chinese energy industry, and it will contribute to the sustainable development in the energy sector, especially for the electricity industry. The main contribution includes:

In recent years, China has witnessed a huge increase in power consumption. Both public and private parties are struggling to meet the demand for electricity. The proposed hydropower project will contribute in a sustainable manner to bridging the gap between supply and demand of power on a regional and national level.

In China, more than 80% of total electricity production is derived from coal based power plants. Being so heavily dependant on coal for its energy requirements, the project will carry environmental benefits for the country’s air, soil and water sources. The project activity will displace the power generation of fossil fuel power plants, reducing CO2, SOx and NOx emissions significantly, thus mitigating the air pollution and its adverse impacts on human health.

The project activity will promote the growth of sustainable and renewable capacity in China and makes it less dependent on exhaustible and polluting fossil fuels.

The project will definitely contribute to the local economic development by improving the local energy generation infra-structure and generating employment during both the construction and the operation of the power plant.
