Description
The Project is designed to avoid methane emissions from anaerobic digestion in an uncontrolled solid waste disposal site located on wetlands, through controlled combustion of the low-quality wood wastes that are generated onsite. The Project is presented by Triplay Amazonico, S.A.C, a leading plywood manufacturer in Amazonian Peru.
The Project involves the installation of a new boiler, capable of firing all of the biomass residues that are generated by the industrial facility. Low-quality wastes, including bark, moist shavings, and sawdust, are presently disposed of off-site as landfill material in swampland. High-quality wastes, akin to firewood, are also combusted in this boiler but not included in the definition of this Project. Combusting these low- quality wastes in the new boiler will avoid the methane emissions associated with their anaerobic decomposition.
The low quality wood processing wastes have low physical densities, high moisture content, and thus poor heating value. They must be co-fired with higher qualities wastes (firewood) in the new boiler, in order to raise steam at the temperature and pressure required by the host industrial site. The new, imported boiler is able to burn this entire mix of biomass residues.
The Project is located in Pucallpa, capital of the Ucayali region of Peru, on Triplay’s industrial facilities. The regional economy is highly dependent on forestry and timber. Triplay was the first plywood manufacturer in the region to achieve complete chain of custody certification for its wood products.
The present off-site disposal of these wastes occurs in a low-lying swampland in the outskirts of Pucallpa, in a barrio known as “Venecia”. As is true in all low-lying areas in the Amazon basin, it is flooded most of the year. Pedestrians normally cross this area on precarious, narrow wooden bridges. The low-quality wood processing wastes included in this Project have been deposited as landfill material to create dry access routes in the area. Due to their rapid decay rate in the swamplands, refilling is required continuously. The regional government wishes to relocate these dwellings to safer land, due to the negative health impacts1 and other dangers of urbanizing swampland.
This Project will contribute positively to sustainable development in the following ways:
• Avoiding methane emissions from the anaerobic digestion of the low-quality wood processing wastes (bark, moist shavings, and sawdust). • Reducing the adverse human health impacts for the population that lives near the present disposal site for these wastes. CDM – Executive Board
• Reducing transport emissions from avoiding the off-site disposal of these wastes • Demonstrating, as a first-in-class pioneer project in the region, a new technology that could bemployed by others with similar waste disposal problems
