Description

Hefei Longquanshan Landfill Gas Power Generation Project, defined as ‘Project Activity’, is a landfill gas recovery and utilisation project developed by Hefei Xinguan Energy Development Co., Ltd. (Project Participant). The Project Activity is located in Hefei Longquanshan Landfill in Anhui province of P.R.China. Longquanshan Landfill started operation in June, 2004, with a design capacity of 7,800,000

  • With a current waste deposition rate of approximately 1,500 tons / day1 the landfill will reach its maximum designed capacity by 20172.
  • Before the implementation of the project activity, landfill gas was emitted freely into the atmosphere. The landfill was not capturing any of the landfill gas for flaring and/or energy production purposes.

    The implementation of the project will reduce methane emission to atmosphere. The landfill gas (LFG) is captured and utilised for power generation. Excess captured landfill gas will be flared. The project activity involves the installation of gas extraction system, leachate drainage system, gas pre-treatment unit, landfill gas power generation plant and flaring equipment.

    The landfill gas will be utilised in three gas engines, with a total capacity of 3.192MW3. The estimated electricity generation will be 22.98 GWh/a4, of which a small part will be self-used onsite and the rest will be delivered to the East China Grid, replacing equivalent electricity which is generated mainly by fossil fuel power plants. The annual average emission reductions of this project are expected to be 143,177 tCO2e.

    Total emission reductions are estimated as 1,431,770 tCO2e over the total ten-year crediting period, including 1,251,931 tCO2e for the capture and destruction of methane and 180,266tCO2e for electricity generation. Project emissions are 427 tCO2e per year.

    The Project Activity will contribute to local and global sustainable development in the following way:  The safety at the landfill-site will increase. Proper extraction and utilisation of the landfill gas will minimise the risk on explosion from aggregated landfill gas.  The air pollution in the surrounding area will decrease. Odour nuisance and health risks of local residents will decrease.

     The transfer of knowledge on waste management principles, landfill gas extraction and landfill gas utilization will be promoted.

     Creation of long term and short term employment opportunities for local people both during the construction period and operation period.
