Description

Purpose

The purpose of the project activity is to effectively utilize the available renewable biomass in generating steam and electrical energy for Shri Renuga Textiles Limited (“SRTL”) and be self reliant in achieving the energy demand. In view of the power shortage situation of the state and being trend setters in the region, SRTL has surrendered1 electricity service connections from the Tamil Nadu Electricity Board for their manufacturing units, thereby demonstrating the concept of decentralized electricity generation and distribution (using renewables) at their industrial complex located at Mariamman Kovilpatti in Theni district, South of India.

SRTL, practicing environmental protection as an integral part of their day to day business activities, has taken a forward step in developing this project under the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) of United Nations Framework Convention for Climate Change (UNFCCC). The project activity is functioning at the industrial complex owned by Shri Renuga Textiles Limited. The project activity, being a captive cogeneration plant of capacity 4.5 MW, generates steam and electric power to meet the energy demands of SRTL. The project activity is operating round the clock. During the days of scheduled maintenance, the manufacturing is stopped (avoiding production with the help of electricity generated by DG sets), thereby clearly demonstrating the environmental consciousness of the promoter.

Contribution to Sustainable Development

Non connectivity to the grid of the facilities under the SRTL manifold and self reliance in meeting the energy demand shows the interest of the project promoter in developing a sustainable environment. The project contributes to sustainable development of India in the following ways:

Effective utilization of renewables for generation of power and steam Non dependence on the grid
Demonstrates viability of Decentralized electricity generation through renewables Project activity is a leading example in the state of Tamil Nadu (India)
Abatement of greenhouse gas emissions, mainly carbon dioxide Rural Employment generation (Direct & Indirect) in the vicinity of the project activity Marginally reducing the demand for electricity in the state Conserving environment and fossil fuels
